Jan 01, 2019·Fatty acid methyl ester sulfonates (MESs) are oleochemical-based anionic surfactants derived from palm or coconut oil through transesterification and subsequent sulfonation. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LASs), alkyl sulfonates (ASs), and alpha olefin sulfonates (AOSs) are generally used as detergent surfactants.
The light colored bleached methyl ester sulfonic acid is neutralized to a controlled pH and sent to a stripper or dryer as required. MES concentrated pastes may be dried to form flakes or needles (>90% active), which are easy to store and transport and are readily processed to a powder by milling or grinding.

By mixing MES with cationic surfactant alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (C n TAB) of different chain lengths, we obtained a much superior system in terms of surface activity as compared to single MES.

The two potentially largest volume, sustainable anionic surfactants, methyl ester sulfonate (MES) and alcohol ether sulfate (AES) are produced from palm oils or coconut oil. MES is biodegradable and can substitute for LAS. AES, besides replacing petroleum-based AES, can substitute for some other ethylene-based surfactants.
General Procedure. A solution of the sulfonic acid (200 mg) in trimethyl (or triethyl) orthoformate (2 mL) was either allowed to stir at room temperature for 14 h., or heated to ref lux for 30 min., under an atmosphere of nitrogen. The excess orthoformate was then removed under vacuum (0.5 mmHg) to give the corresponding methyl (or ethyl) ester.
